Geocache Description:

This is a series of multi-caches that I intend to place around the rural churches of North Monmouthshire. There are so many lovely churches around the area that are undervisited, so I hope to attract a few more visitors to these great spots. I shall add to the series as I go along.

All of the caches start at the church where you need to find the answers to a couple of questions to allow you to find the final cache position, and none are intended to be particularly difficult (I would prefer you to find the caches) or are more than 1/2 a kilometre from the church.

This is the thirty-sixth in the series and starts at the pleasant church of St. Peter in Goetre - a rather spread out village that consists of Goetre (often named as Goytre) and Nant-y-Derry. The church itself is in the Nant-y-Derry area which is why I have called it that in the title. The co-ords are for the car parking area next to the church.

The church itself consists of a chancel, nave, south porch and a western belfry, and was rebuilt in 1845/46 in the Early English style, at the cost of about £1,400. Prior to this the building was a very simple affair without a tower and little now remains of the original building except two sandstone heads survive in the south porch. The medieval roof of the chancel is also still there.

Other old items (non-building) that remain are the font from the Norman period, and an ancient chest. Also there are two alms dishes made from a 1000 year old yew! Also of interest is the chancel roof which survives from medieval times.

To find the whereabouts of the final cache location look for the answers to the questions below and replace the letters for the appropriate numbers in the co-ords at the bottom. So here we go:

Next to the car parking you will see a churchyard cross. The number of sides on the main 'post' is A.

From the parking co-ords head round to the right and the west end of the church (the bell-cote end) and look up at the head-shaped carvings/corbels. How many are there? This is B.

Still looking at the corbels - how many are situated higher up than the bells? This is C.

Head round to the porch, go in and you will see a wall safe that has a dedication plaque to the right of it. What is the first number on it? This is D.

How many white panels on one half of the porch ceiling (ignore that horizontal beam or you'll get double the number)? This is E.

How many churchyard crosses are there in total? The answer is F.

So replace your answers in this co-ord and off you go to get the cache! Final position N 51° 44.AF(C+D) W 002° 58.(B-F)(B-E)D

You are looking for a good-sized small container. You can easily walk to the cache from the church.
