This Cache has been placed in a local park of Campbelltown. I have recently moved to this area and I was looking at what caches were available in this area. I was shocked to discover there were no caches in Mawson Park, so I decided to place my 1st cache there.
Mawson Park is located in the heart of the Campbelltown CBD on the corner of Queen & Cordeaux streets. The park is named after Dr Mawson, brother of Sir Douglas Mawson of Antarctica fame. The park is the site of the war memorial and is often used for formal ceremonies such as Anzac day & Remembrance day.
One of the statues in the park is of Mrs Elizabeth Macquarie(1778-1835), the second wife of Lachlan Macquarie who served as Governor of NSW from 1810-1821. Her maiden name was Campbell, hence where we get the suburb Campbelltown.
Elizabeth was the youngest daughter of John Campbell of Airds, Scotland. She is said to have taken a particular interest in the welfare of women convicts and indigenous people as well as helping pioneer hay-making in the colony. At the end of her husband's term, she returned with him to Scotland in 1823. The Macquaries had two children, a girl Jane who died in infancy and a boy Lachlan. She died at Gruline House on 11 March 1835 and was posthumously granted 2,000 acres of land in NSW.
The site of this cache has many monuments and war artifacts, so I would request people respect the area and keep the Geokids in check. There is no need to enter or stand on any Monuments.
Stealth maybe required due to it being a busy park at times. Just a note with this cache, the GPS jumps around within the park. Could be up to 15meters out. ****Congratulations to Chrissy61 FTF.
