Geocache Description:

Celebrating Kingston-upon-Hull's year as the UK City of Culture, the Hull Culture Cache series will take you on a whistle-stop tour of some of the locations that will host events and art installations throughout 2017. The venues are spread out across the city, suburbs and wider East Riding area. This is central to the Hull2017 ethos of engaging strongly with the local communities.

All caches in the series should be simple finds. The series is designed to show off our fabulous city and surrounding area

Some caches will contain a bonus letter on the log sheet. Make a note of the letters you find and the cache that they were found in. These will be needed for a future bonus cache

1. Queen Victoria Square

History

The city's main public square and home to civic buildings on 3 sides. A Bronze memorial to the aforementioned monarch sits proudly atop the public toilets in the middle of the square.

The City Hall lies to the West. Despite it's name, it does not perform an administrative function but hosts many concerts, exhibitions and civic receptions each year. Built during the early 20th Century, it was badly damaged during the blitz, however it was fully restored by 1950. Notable appearances on the balcony over the years include: Roger Millward and the Hull KR team following their Wembley victory over cross-city rivals Hull FC in 1980; Ian Ashbee, Dean Windass and the Hull City team following their first ever promotion to the Premier League in 2008; Cannon and Ball, The Chuckle Brothers, Christopher Biggins and numerous other pantomime stars as part of the annual Christmas Light switch-on.

To the East is the Maritime Museum, an impressive 3-domed Victorian building originally built in 1872 as the Dock Offices of the Hull Dock Company. Since 1974, it has housed the city's maritime collection, remembering the whaling, fishing and maritime trades of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Finally, to the South is the Ferens Art Gallery, widely recognised as one of the UK's finest regional galleries. It opened in 1927 having been gifted to the city by local industrialist and philanthropist Thomas Ferens. He also started a trust fund which has allowed its permanent collection to grow. Today this includes works by Canaletto, Frans Hals, Henry Moore, and David Hockney. The gallery re-opened in January 2017 following a £4.5m revamp which will see it host the Turner Prize in the Winter as part of the City of Culture celebrations.

2017

The Square is one of the main focal points of Hull City Council's £30m public realm works which has involved major ground works and creating new lighting, street furniture and state-of-the-art fountains and water jets. A poem about Hull, "The City Speaks", is etched in to the new paving around the fountains.
One of the first events of the City of Culture celebrations was "Made In Hull", a week long public art exhibition which included video projections on to the civic buildings in Queen Victoria Square. An estimated 350,000 people visited the city centre during the week.
