Geocache Description:

Celebrating Kingston-upon-Hull's year as the UK City of Culture, the Hull Culture Cache series will take you on a whistle-stop tour of some of the locations that will host events and art installations throughout 2017. The venues are spread out across the city, suburbs and wider East Riding area. This is central to the Hull2017 ethos of engaging strongly with the local communities.

All caches in the series should be simple finds. The series is designed to show off our fabulous city and surrounding area

Some caches will contain a bonus letter on the log sheet. Make a note of the letters you find and the cache that they were found in. These will be needed for a future bonus cache

3. Whitefriargate Amuseagents

History

Once home to Carmelite Friars in the Middle Ages (known as white friars because of the colour of their habits), Whitefriargate is one of the main pedestrian thoroughfares in Hull, linking Queen Victoria Square with the Old Town.

At its Western end are the excavated remains of Beverley Gate, the North-West Entrance to the city where in 1642 King Charles I was denied access by Governor of Hull Sir John Hotham, thus sparking the English Civil War.

At its Eastern end is probably Hull's most famous street "Land of Green Ginger". There are many theories as to where this name comes from although many believe it is related to the warehouses and shops selling spices and other eastern delights which were brought in to Hull by boat from far off lands. Here you will also find England's smallest window, used by the gatekeeper of the George Hotel to look out for stagecoaches and customers.

2017

Another attraction of "Made In Hull" involved the use of empty shop fronts on Whitefriargate for pop-up art installations. By far the most popular of these was The Amuseagents - a faux-newsagents shop front, plastered in humourous small ads (many of which are hull-centric, so local knowledge is useful).

Following the success of this particular installation, it was agreed that it would stay in place until the shop was let.
