#7 The Dogliest Detective and the Case of the Missing Dollar
Toby had spent the morning investigating a mystery at Connors Park and he returned to the Alaska Consulting Detective Agency looking forward to his doggie bag lunch. He had tipped Penny the waitress well for the dinner the night before, and he knew from the smell and heft of the doggie bag that she had added a piece of cheesecake to the leftovers.
So he was shocked to walk into the office to see the very same waitress cuffed to a chair and surrounded by three of the large ACDA detectives. "What is going on here?" he asked.
Captain McGruff, Toby's boss, glared at him sharply and said "This woman stole from us at lunch. We offered to let her off if she returned the stolen money, but she refused. Now she is going to prison. We had lunch at the restaurant and split up the $28 bill -- Detective Vincent Crabbe paid $15, Detective Gregory Goyle left $10 and I added $5 to cover the tip too."
Penny spoke up, "I collected the money and the tiny tip. But my manager said that he has to 'give' Captain McGruff a $5 discount. He ordered me to run out and return the money to the Captain. I admitted that I only gave him back $3 and kept $2 to make a normal tip on the meal."
McGruff laughed at her admission. "Maybe you even earned a huge tip, Miss Waitress, so we won't hold that against you this one time. If you had just told the truth and admitted it, we would have let it go. But you are still trying to lie to us expert detectives and that is a deep insult."
"We left $30 in the restaurant. After you returned a dollar to each of us, the three of us had then paid $27 for the meal. Yet you claim to have only kept $2. Our $27 and your $2 only adds up to $29, so clearly you also stole the missing dollar."
Several police officers arrived to take the prisoner down for booking. Toby knew that Penny did skirt the rules and give out extra cheese cake to favorite customers, but would she go this far? His tail started wagging as he said "Excuse me officers. Let's round up 30 one dollar bills at let me show you something...."
From then on, Toby's doggie bags were heavy and much more satisfying than the meal he paid for. __________________________________
