Bailey Mill Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

IMGOIN2: I have sold the property I own in this area, and finds by my fellow geocachers have been few and far between. So it is time to retire this one. Today I removed it before archiving this cache.

Geocache Description:

Bailey Mill was a thriving community of 600, with its own post office, in the 19th century, with logging operations and a sawmill owned by the Bailey Brothers, John and Jim.  Here are pieces of the boiler that powered the mill and remains of the docks where the sailing ships docked on the Satilla River.  It is all gone now, the mill having faced bankruptcy in the 1870's after Jim Bailey moved upriver a few miles to open his own mill, closer to the supply of logs.

This one is rated a bit more challenging, because it's 25 minutes or so from I-95, about 4.5 miles down Bailey Mill Road, a dirt road, in an out of the way place that sees very few travelers.  You will find (look carefully!) an unmarked, somewhat overgrown car path leading directly to the river; pull off on that and walk down toward the old dock pilings.  Just before the river, take a left, and in 25 feet or so, you will see some of the old bricks and pieces of the boiler that fired the old mill.  I left a FTF piece (retrieved by PeterC3611 shortly after publication!) and some other SWAG that you might find interesting in this double boxed cache.
