Geocache Description:

150 Geocaches have been hidden to guide your exploration of NC as you traverse highways and by-ways across the state as you learn from those fighting and those keeping the home fires burning during the Civil War, 1861 - 1865.

Thirty caches are located in five different regions throughout NC. Instructions for sending the documentation are in the passport. Once all five regions are completed, you have earned a special NC Civil War trackable geocoin. Mail the passport to the address inside the passport – then your passport will be returned with your unique coin.

Container is a replacement- the code word you need for your passport is inside the container on a laminated card and also taped on the container that holds the log sheet. Date your logbook and add your code word in the numbered area for the cache.

Passports will be available at the event, some Civil War Museums in NC, and via mail if you send me you address or you can download your passport here.

USCT Memorial

The reference coordinates bring you to The informational marker  for this memorial describes it as a “rare monument” – and that’s quite correct to say. Because this is one of but three monuments honoring colored troops that was built in a former Confederate state before 1990. The other two such monument are the West Point Monument in Norfolk, Virginia, and the Civil War Monument in Portsmouth, Virginia; both of them are described further below.

North Carolina had a relatively medium- to small-sized presence in the USCT (compared to other states), providing just over 5,000 men to the Union army. The United States army did not have an extensive occupying presence in the state, except for some of the state’s coastal areas. Hertford is in Perquiman county, which is situated along North Carolina’s northeastern coast; however, at this point in my research, I don’t know if or how long the Union controlled the area, or, how many African Americans lived there.

Visiting the monument recommended only during daylight hours.
