Nasuno Field is a large alluvial fan spread between Houki River and Naka River. As a nature of alluvial fan this area is thick covered with sandy gravel and water will penetrate into the ground. Sabi River and Kuma River flowing the center of the alluvial fan do not have water except in case of heavy rain. Have to drill deep to get ground water. Water of Naka River or Kuma River flow lower elevation and can’t lead into the field. Thus this area has not been suitable for agriculture and no settlement until the end of Edo era. Meiji government made new development plan and Nasu Irrigation Canal was developed. With this canal this area has been developed as a rich farmland.
The main stream of Nasu Sosui is ended here, The remaining flow as the fourth divide toward Hoki River.
那須野ヶ原は箒川と那珂川に挟まれた広大な扇状地です。扇状地のため厚い砂礫の層に覆われており水は浸透してしまい、中央部分を流れる蛇尾川、熊川は大雨以外の時は水無川となっています。 井戸水を得るにも深くまで掘る必要があり、那珂川・箒側の水も那須野ヶ原より低いところを流れているので引水が困難でした。 このようなことからこの地域は農業に適さず、江戸末期までは殆ど人の住まない原野でした。 しかし明治政府の開拓政策により日本三大疏水の一つである那須疏水が開削され、開拓が進められるようになりました。
那須疏水本幹水路はここで終点となります。残りは第四分水として箒川の方へ流れていきます。
