Norman Kirk was the Prime Minister of New Zealand in the third Labour Government elected in 1972. He was a very popular Prime Minister. Throughout his political career, Kirk promoted the welfare state, supporting government spending for housing, health, employment, and education. As such, Kirk often appeared as a champion for ordinary New Zealanders. His working-class background also gave him some advantage, as ordinary voters saw many other politicians as out-of-touch and aloof. He also had a major influence on foreign policy, withdrawing NZ troops from Vietnam and sending frigates to Mururoa Atoll to protest against French nuclear tests. He died tragically in office in 1974. The Chatham Islands was a favourite retreat för "Big Norm". The reserve is named in his honour.
The reserve is a centre of social life on the island. With its community hall with meeting room facilities and squash court, netball courts and a racecourse, the reserve is a hive of activity at times, especially in spring during the annual pig hunting competition and at the New Year horse racing meets. There is also a memorial garden in the grounds.
The cache is hidden on the reserve. It is a simple one stage multi. Firstly, find the date that the Chatham Island Jockey Club was established (hint, look on the racetrack). Secondly find the date the memorial garden was established.
