Didsbury Cemetery CITO - Take Two! Cache In Trash Out® Event

This cache has been archived.

GeoWyrm: Again, geocachers made us proud! The town of Didsbury thanks everyone who came out to clean headstones with the graduating class of Didsbury HS. We had geocachers from Regina, Calgary, Airdrie and Carstairs (of course, Didsbury too).

So thank you. Sincerely, thank you.

Geocache Description:

When: Wednesday, May 10th from 1pm to 3pm.

The town was so impressed with the enthusiasm and the number of geocachers who came out to help, they are thrilled to once again invite us to participate.

We hope you can join us in cleaning part of this historical area, and preserving it for generations to come.

Students from the Didsbury High School have been taking time to clean headstones in the Didsbury Cemetery since at least 2011. The concept began after a very unfortunate incident of vandalism in hopes that the act of preservation of history would instill a feeling of guardianship in the students. It has been a great success and continues as an annual event.

The town of Didsbury will be supplying a truck with warm water and the Didsbury Cemetery Committee is supplying bottled water and light refreshments for the volunteers, along with the necessary cleaning supplies.

Keep your eyes open while in the area. There are nine moose that currently inhabit the surrounding are of the town, including a mama and her juveniles, and a couple of older juveniles from last year. They are frequent visitors in the cemetery and although they are quite accustomed to people, it is important to give them wide berth when spotted and never get between the mama and her kids.

Didsbury Cemetery:

  • The cemetery is set on 9.75 acres with approximated 3250 graves, 94 cremation plots, and a columbarium containing 48 niches.
  • The earliest recorded burial dates back to 1900.
  • The Didsbury Cemetery Committee was created in 2011 to oversee the guardianship and beautifying of the cementary property. One of the mandates was to create the newly installed sign (near coordinates) with future plans for a fence and greenery.
  • Historical records are available for viewing at the Town Office.

We do recognize there are many who have expressed interest in participating but work weekdays or are otherwise committed. Unfortunately, it is complicated to get the town to provide support services evenings or weekends (i.e. outside their regular hours); however, we are still working on it.

P.S. Welcome to our 100th geocache!
