Geocache Description:

The islands and shores of Lake Tana host more than 20 monasteries, many of which were founded in the 14th century. The conservational element in Orthodox Christianity ensured that the monasteries and their surroundings not only convey a sense of spirituality and tranquility but also provided protection for the environment.

The monastery of Uta Kidane Mihret is dedicated to Mary, the mother of Jesus and was founded in the 14th century by the saint Betre Maryam. Located on the forested Zege Peninsula, it is considered to be the most impressive of all monasteries in the Tana region. The circular church consists of three ring walls. Its inner circle features a large variety of biblical paintings that give you a good idea of Ethiopia in the medieval ages. The church houses its treasures in a nearby museum, displaying for example the crowns of Emperors Tewordros II and Yohannes IV.

To reach the monastery, the easiest way is by boat from Bahir Dar. While the public ferry can be a colourful and relaxed but somewhat long experience, the fastest means is to get a charter boat which takes you to the ferry landing in about 45 minutes from Bahir Dar. It is then an easy 10 minutes' walk through a wild coffee forest, passing a number of stalls selling souvenirs
(Mind, the population is crucial for protecting the unique environment which qualified Lake Tana as UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserve. Tourism plays a crucial part in providing to the livelihoods around the lake).
You can also visit the peninsula by road transport from Bahir Dar.

The entrance fee to the monastery and its museum is 100 ETB (in 2017). You could get to the cache without visiting the monastery, but that would be a missed opportunity. The cache is hidden conveniently along the more tranquil shortcut way back to the ferry jetty. You don't have to venture into the forest.

Note by the owner (July 2019):
After four years in Ethiopia, my time in the 'Land of Origins' came to an end in July 2019. I have done my best to widen and maintain the net of geocaches in the country, but now need to call on my fellow cachers for help: If you venture out to search for this cache, please take a replacement container with you, just in case the original is gone. - Sundowner74
