It is believed that Crokinole was first played in the 1860s among the Mennonites of south central Ontario. The earliest known Crokinole board was built by Eckhardt Wettlaufer, who lived near Tavistock. He made the board as a 5th birthday gift for his son, Adam. Tavistock is the host of the World Crokinole Championships, which began in 1999.
We have many happy memories of playing Crokinole, both at home, and when we visited our grandparents. The games were particularly intense when we competed against our cousins every Christmas and New Year's Day. How we admired, and envied, our cousin Bill's ability to score 20s!
