Geocache Description:

FWC 75th WMA Anniversary Geocache at Salt Lake Wildlife Management Area.

FWC is looking for volunteers to take over the care and maintenance of their official geocaches! (( Not this particular cache because it has already been adopted and and is being fostered by SusieLoco and SuoLoco )) Stay involved in one of your favorite outdoor activities and find opportunities to help out FWC and learn about what goes into fish and wildlife management. Contact me or visit http://myfwc.com/get-involved/volunteer/

This geocache was part of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Wildlife Management Area System in 2017. There are 49 geocaches hidden on WMAs across Florida, from the panhandle to the Keys. See if you can find them all!

For more information on Salt Lake WMA visit http://myfwc.com/viewing/recreation/wmas/lead/salt-lake/. You can also see a calendar of hunt dates on this site.

Salt Lake’s habitats shelter more than 200 bird species. Look for turkeys along the mowed power lines. Wading birds (wood stork, roseate spoonbill, night-herons, bitterns and egrets), waterfowl, rails, pelicans, gulls and terns, alligators, turtles and river otters may be found around numerous lakes, the marshes and the St. Johns River. The secretive black rail and the uncommon reddish egret sometimes occur here. Watch for breeders such as black-necked stilt, glossy ibis, osprey, Cooper’s hawk, hairy woodpecker and eastern bluebird. Shorebird activity can be high in spring, fall and winter, particularly along brackish Salt Lake and its adjacent salt flats on the northwest side of the WMA. Gopher tortoise and Florida scrub-jay may be seen in the eastern, scrubbier portions of the property near South Lake. The geocache is located along the South Lake Hiking Trail.

Please replace the container and the natural camoe better than found.
