Geocache Description:

This is the eighteenth in a series called Dinocaches. I like dinosaurs. Each cache should have some sort of very cheaply made plastic dinosaur inside or nearby. The dinosaur at this cache is a Styracosaur. He's a lot like Tim and Terry. Just slightly different frills around his hood. He's also quite shy. Please leave the cache and Saul exactly as you found them.

  • "Styracosaurus" means "spiked lizard". This name was chosen by Lawrence Lambe in 1913.

  • Styracosaurus was a member of the Ornithischia ("bird-hipped") order of dinosaurs. What this means, is that although Styracosaurus was not closely related to birds, it did have similarly shaped pelvic bones.

  • Styracosaurus was a Ceraptosian - a member of a group of related herbivorous (plant-eating) dinosaurs with beaks, many of which had neck frills and horns as well.

  • Styracosaurus lived between about 76 million years ago and 70 million years ago, during the late Cretaceous period.

  • Styracosaurus lived in North America, but didn't have a passport.

  • Styracosaurus was a herbivore (plant-eater).

  • Styracosaurus was about 18 feet (5.5 meters) long.

  • Styracosaurus weighed about 3 tons.
