L’edificio è costituito dal seguente materiale: cotto, tufo, ciottoli morenici e marmo. Di stile romanico nei tratti essenziali, la chiesa presenta forme semplici, severe, con poche ma finissime decorazioni a rilievo. L’esterno è elegante e molto curato nei particolari, nonostante siano evidenziate la compostezza e la sobrietà delle superfici e la modalità espressiva, fondamentale nell’arte romanica. La facciata a spioventi, contornata da un fregio di archetti pensili policromi, è costituita da corsi in tufo e cotto e presenta un protiro pensile (nartece), sorretto da mensoloni di pietra viva, sopra i quali si apre una bifora sormontata da una piccola finestra divisa a croce. La facciata, lungo gli spioventi del tetto, è demarcata elegantemente anche da un contorno-cornice di archetti rampanti, a denti di sega, e in corrispondenza della navata maggiore si trova una sopraelevazione, che offre slancio alla costruzione. La chiesa è circondata da una cinta muraria con cancellata. Un tempo la recinzione era costituita da una muratura molto elevata, costruita circa trecento anni dopo l’edificazione della pieve, poi ridotta allo stato attuale. L’antica cinta era talmente alta che cancellò per anni ai passanti l’esistenza della chiesa.
