This is a reasonably easy walk with a round-trip of about 5 miles. At the time the cache was placed there was an abundance of wildflowers.
Recommended parking is at the Pacific Crest Trailhead near Donner Summit. Exit I-80 at Boreal Ridge and go east on the south frontage road to N39-20.373, W120-20.573.
Follow the access trail to the PCT, then go northerly along the PCT (through the pedestrian tunnels under I-80) to the trail to Summit Lake. There are signs pointing to Summit Lake at the major trail junctions. For the less energetic, we believe it is possible to drive to Summit Lake with a 4WD, but we think the walk is much better.
The cache is a plastic bottle, about 1qt., painted camo, and quite full, so bring small.
THIS IS A TWO-STAGE CACHE.
Stage One: Follow the coordinates at top of page to a chiseled name and date in a blaze on the east side of a lodgepole pine at Summit Lake. Said blaze was made a very long time ago by a member of the Euer family, an early day ranching family. Except for the first initial which has been damaged, the name and date is legible. Gather information at this stage to find Stage Two.
Stage Two: Take the day of the month shown in the blaze and multiply it by 5. Add the result to the last 2 digits in (A), the latitude, below. Multiply the last digit of the year as shown on the blaze by 9 and add it to the last two digits of (B), the longitude, below. Have fun with your sums.
