We all know people who at times can be said to be "three sheets to the wind" after having had too much to drink, as they can be very unsteady on their feet and walk in an erratic manner. Did you ever wonder where the saying came from? Sheets actually refers to the ropes used to fasten sails onto boats. There are always 2 sheets (ropes) per sail and 2 sails per boat, making a total of 4 sheets. Sailboats that are being pushed by the wind are said to be "to the wind". If 1 of the sheets becomes loose or isn't fastened properly the boat will become hard to control and will sail in a very erratic manner (much the same as a drunk person might walk) and are said to be "three sheets to the wind". Over the years the saying has carried over from describing sailboats to describing drunk persons.
