Geocache Description:

This cache has been placed to highlight a special and unique place the Tukino village that comprises of three club lodges. At 1700 m this is a true alpine environment that is spectacular to visit in both summer and winter.

To retrieve this cache you will be at Tukino village on the eastern slopes of Mt Ruapehu in the Tongarero National Park which has dual World Heritage status (In 1990 Tongariro National Park was declared a World Heritage site, in recognition of its outstanding natural characteristics, In 1993 the Park was also granted Cultural World Heritage status under revised criteria (spiritual (intangible) cultural association), in recognition of its cultural significance and history) with strong connections to the local Iwi and is managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC). Mt Ruapehu, the largest active volcano in New Zealand, is the highest point on the North Island and has three major peaks: Tahurangi (2,797 m), Te Heuheu (2,755 m) and Paretetaitonga (2,751 m) and two minor peaks Girdlestone (2,658 m) and Mitre (2,591 m) with a deep, active crater is between the major peaks that is filled with water.

This is a magical place both summer and winter and if you get a chance to stay at the village it is well worth it. During summer there is endless walking and rock climbing, and winter skiing, boarding, alpine climbing, ski touting and ice climbing.

Tukino ski field is one of only two club ski fields in the north island and is unique in that the three clubs (Tukino Alpine Sports Club, Aorangi Ski Club, and Desert Alpine Club) jointly run the ski field during winter. This is a club field open to the public. Tukino is known for its untouched trails, uncrowded slopes, friendly atmosphere and good weather. Accommodation is available at Tukino for those that want to stay and play, but bookings are essential.

Although the cache is accessible all year round, a winter collection could prove challenging with snow levels and people on an operational ski field.

As with all alpine environments, you should be prepared for weather changes, by having/wearing the appropriate footwear, warm clothing, and wet weather gear. There is minimal public shelter at the CZ when the lodges are not occupied.

Getting There
Access is via the Tukino access Road from the Desert Road, and is suitable for four wheel drive vehicles only during the winter months. To get to the carpark, turn off SH1 at S 39 17.807 E 175 44.432 and follow the road for 7kms to the signposted carpark. The road is suitable for 2 wheel drives to this point and beyond it is 4X4 only. When driving stay on the poled road, resist the temptation to go off the road to do some "free driving". In winter 4X4's must carry chains and tow strop if going beyond the car park. There are two more possible parking spots beyond the car park, which may not be suitable during winter. They are at the round the mountain track at S 39° 16.126 E 175° 39.351 or at the radio repeater at  S 39° 16.064 E 175° 39.243. Road access to the Tukino village will require a key for the locked gate at S 39° 16.197 E 175° 38.945. During the ski season (July to September) the gate is open. It is 7km from the first car park to the Tukino village. Walking is always an option from the car park in summer or you can catch a ski field shuttle in winter for a minimal cost each way. Would pay to check the cost before jumping aboard.

About the Cache
The cache is located somewhere on the Tukino village flat, it is not in or close to any of the three lodges. The cache is not particularly difficult to find as the challenge is getting to the CZ. There is room for trackables in a separate container, please use this. You will understand this when you see the cache. The coordinates are +/- 4m when placing. Cache contains log book only. Bring your own pen.

Please ensure that the cache is left as you find it, and sealed to prevent damage from water and environment.

Logging Request
As a geocache owner I have enjoyed placing this cache, the culmination of some effort and planning, and even some small expense. Beyond that the placement is for your enjoyment and benefit, not my own. You may log your find in any manner you choose, single word, acronym, or emoticon logs, copy and paste logs, or even, "a quick find after dinner" are all fine by me.Please however do not use your log for the promotion (however worthwhile you consider it) of any cause, belief, or event that is unrelated to your find.
