The Owens Lake was slowly drained when William Mullholland and his Los Angeles Aqueduct diverted water from the lake to the growing city of Los Angeles. The lake was mostly dried up by 1926, leaving behind an exposed lake bed and dust problem.
The cache is located on the kiosk of the Boulder Creek access route for the Owens Lake Trails. The Owens Lake Project features the land art installation designed by Percy Cardoza. It is part of the dust mitigation agreement by LADWP to help control the dust problem from the dry Owens Lake. By planting native vegetation and adding sprinklers it has also rejuvenated this migratory spot for water fowl including the Snowy Plover. At the kiosk you can find more information regarding the Trails and a booklet with directions to the various trails. Following the trails by vehicle and walking will bring you to the land art of Mr. Cardoza. At these areas you can bird watch or just enjoy the scenery around you.
