Lot 1132 Manning Street
The Function House, which backs onto Manning Street in the western part of Gwalia Ghost Town, was recently closed to the public and is awaiting conservation work.
This cottage has been furnished with a collection of interesting objects from various periods, including an old piano in one corner of the verandah.
Constructed between 1900 and 1920, the Function House is a traditional vernacular Goldfields dwelling comprising the typical two room frontage with a break-pitch roof over the verandah, with two additional rooms leading from the kitchen at the back. This extension was done over various periods.
The front verandah has a corrugated iron baluster to dado level and the upper section is enclosed with lattice. The rear of the cottage is covered by an extensive skillion-roofed area off the main gabled roof. A picket fence surrounds the front yard, while corrugated iron fences the back yard.
The Function House was relocated to its current position in 1985 from the Gwalia Block behind the State Hotel and substantially rebuilt. Further work was undertaken as part of the 1995 Adopt-A-Cottage programme.
The house itself is closed to the public but feel free to look at the relics on the front verandah.
