Bigbury-on-sea

As with many seaside villages bigbury on sea started as a few fisherman's cottages and with the birth of holiday making grew and became a popular destination. Bigbury-on-sea boasts the largest sandy beach on the South Devon coast but also has a section of rockpools. This area is also very popular for water sports.  Perhaps most famous about the area is Burgh Island, a tidal island linked to the mainland by a Tombolo. There is a sea tractor that traverses at high tide allowing people to visit back and forth to the island when the bar is impassable on foot, the island has lovely footpaths as well as an Art Deco hotel, The pilchard inn and a few private dwellings. The hotel is the setting of an Agatha Christie novel and has featured as a filming location in many Tv shows. There is an interesting history to the island which is well worth looking in to.

The Cache

This cache will take you on a short walk around the mainland area, the walk is intended to be circular but if the tide is high you may need your wellies or need to take a slightly different route to all the waypointed stages. Starting at the headline coordinates you will find a notice board.

Bottom left of the notice board there is a photo of two things, the number of letters in those two things, as labelled in the photo, not including the ‘and’ will give you the value of A

From here you can also see the famous Pilchard inn on Burgh island, you can answer this with a zoom lens or after a short walk... (this was on the old notice board but is easy found out without so I left it in!)

The Inn dates from 13BC?

Just one more here!

if you were to ‘Hike over to the village of Ringmore’ how many miles would you walk? This gives you D

Now you can walk down to the lower car park and along the front until you see a large information point at waypoint 2. On this board there is a map including various icons. How many icons feature within the small zoomed map to the bottom left? This gives you E

Head down the steps nearby and onto the beach, enjoy a walk in the sand!

When you reach the next waypoint you will find another information point, how many metres away is the lifeguard? This is FG0

From here head up the slope a few metres and turn left up the footpath, then along the road across the bay until you reach the iconic K6 phonebox. The phone number is 81H237

You now have the values A-H put them into the following formula and you are off to find the cache!

n50 17.H(E-G)(C-G)

w003 53.(A-D)(B+F)(B-F-G)

Please note the Formula was changed as of 16/08/2017 to reflect a short move in final location

Good Luck!
