Abe Doumar moved from Syria to the US around the turn of the 20th Century. He was working at the 1904 St Louis World’s Fair when the ice cream seller ran out of paper plates. Doumar bought a waffle, rolled it up, and the ice cream cone was born. Over the next few years, he set up ice cream shops from Coney Island to Miami Beach. In 1907, with the Jamestown Exposition, Doumar opened a stand at Ocean View Amusement Park. Since Norfolk was in the middle of his area, Doumar moved his family to Norfolk. When the stand was destroyed by a hurricane in the 1930’s he moved to the current location on Monticello Ave. Today, that location is the last one, and is still owned by the Doumar family. The first cone maker is still in use.

Where was the first Norfolk Doumar’s?

a) Ocean View Amusement Park N 36 51.704 W 076 17.835

b) Miami Beach N 36 51.763 W 076 17.787
