Geocache Description:

Another in the Petersham Landmarks series. The original was archived on 15 January 2017

The cache is near the site of the landmark, and not on the site. 


The cache is located on Trafalgar Street near the main Western railway line.

Diagonally across the road from cache is the West Street Campus of Petersham Tafe.

The building was formerly the Petersham Girls High School built between 1878 - 1890, but is now a Tafe Campus.

Inside the Tafe campus and near the street entrance to the Tafe is a memorial to Flight Lieutenant David George Rochford, who died on Wednesday, 2nd May 1945, along with Leading Aircraftman Charles Broughton Boydell, who also died that same day.

Both were on a training mission in a RAF Mosquito aeroplane. The plane disintegrated whilst in flight. Rochford's body was found in the grounds of the school, whilst Boydell's body was found at Petersham Train Station. The quick thinking

Their aircraft disintegrated over Petersham during a test flight. A quick thinking school teacher covered the body with a parachute from the crash to hide the body from the school's students.

The memorial plaque is made out of metal from the plane's wreckage.
