Geocache Description:

This cache is near a very old cemetery in Vandalia IL with some very unique stones and residents.  Make sure you walk around a little and find someone "famous".  Yes - Abraham Lincoln did attend some funerals here!  Placed with permission.

When Vandalia served as the capital of Illinois the General Assembly reserved 1/2 acre of this local cemetery for members of the legislature that might die while serving at the capital.  During this time in history weather conditions could prevent the transfer of a body to their home for burial.  The body could easily decompose in the summer heat or would "suffer further indignities from the crude forms of transportation" trying to get it back home. Four legislators, one federal judge and a few war heroes are interred here. See if you can find the monument recognizing the state officials who died while serving in Vandalia.

Enjoy!
