McKinley Lake Mine, also known as the Lucky Strike mine, was a highly capitalized yet completely unsuccessful gold and silver mine that evolved and persisted through many of Cordova's early years. Apparently, only 16 oz of gold and 9 oz of silver ever came out of it! Perhaps its folly was its greatest legacy, although we can still see the remnants of the endeavor today.

This cache will require about a 5 mile RT hike ( 2.6 miles each way), without much elevation or difficulty, depending on snow/ice cover (ice cleats would definitely have made the hide much easier, perhaps sometimes snowshoes would be handy). The path takes you past two Forest Service cabins to the site of the mine. The cabins can be reserved online, and are recommended. The first, McKinley Trail Cabin is near the highway and trailhead, and can be reserved here. The second, McKinley Lake Cabin, is located near the mine itself, about 2.3 miles from the highway, and can be reserved here.
