All Saints, Hough-on-the-Hill

ALL SAINTS, HOUGH-ON-THE-HILL

All Saints, Hough-on-the-Hill is a Grade I listed building achieving the status on 20 September 1966.

The church was built in the 11th Century with additions in late C12th, early C13th, C15th, late C17th and 1787, before a major refurbishment in 1845. The construction of the building is from coursed ironstone and limestone rubble, some ashlar, red brick, ashlar dressings, slate and lead roofs. The west tower has an extremely unusual circular stair turret. The nave has north and south aisles, south porch and a rectangular chancel with north aisle. The C11th rubble stair turret is attached to the west wall of an earlier tower. The tower was built in 4 stages, the lower 3 of C11th rubble with quoins and 2 string courses, the upper C15th ashlar with single stringcourse.

All Saints' has 3 large rectangular windows, the central one of the 3 has ogee headed lights flanked by single windows with 3 plain pointed lights. Central window has "1787 J. LUMX," inscribed on lintel. Various names are inscribed on stones set high between the windows. The nave's north aisle is higher than the Chancel and the aisle gable has C18th red brick infilling. The south side of the aisle has two C15th rectangular windows each of 3 ogee cusped lights with mouchettes above. The west side has a re-set C11th window. The porch interior is flanked by stone benches. The early C13th south door was restored in C19th. The ceiling is C15th timber frame with ornate bosses. The pews are C19th, as is the pulpit and stone font.

There is a black and white marble monument on the north wall of nave to Arabella Ashton who died in 1792. On the south wall of the nave, there is an ornate grey and black marble monument to John Marris who died in 1785. There are a further two large monuments in the north arcade, both in white and grey marble with sarcophagus and obelisk, dedicated to Edward Payne, who died 1710 and Thomas Payne, who died 1742.
