According to the Forestry Commission, the black poplar ((Populus nigra) is the most endangered native timber tree in Britain. Black poplar wood is fine textured, soft and almost white in colour. It resistant to shock, and traditional uses therefore included carts, floorboards and clogs. It was also used to make matches. Today, black poplar timber is used to make artificial limbs, wine cases, pallets, shelving and toys.
Sadly, this particular landmark tree is no more having come down in strong winds in December 2016.
This cache was placed in the heart of this once massive but sadly rotten example on a very pleasant country lane in Lower Broadheath.
Unbelievably, the farmer came and removed the massive trunk section and its cache later the day I placed it so it is now in the rather more permanent fencepost in the hedge!
