Rope Walk, previously known as Roper's Lane, operated as a functioning "rope walk" between 1625 and 1818.
As Ipswich grew into a thriving centre for shipping and agriculture, rope was an increasingly essential commodity. Rope walks sprang up around the docks to meet demand.
There have been seven rope walks in Ipswich over the years. A ropemaker would literally walk up and down the street, twisting strands of yarn and combining them into thicker rope.
