Im Land zwischen den Meeren sind eine Vielzahl von Insektenarten in unterschiedlichen Lebensräumen heimisch. Einige, wie Mücken, Wespen, Ameisen und Fliegen, werden als lästige Begleiter empfunden, andere, wie Schmetterlinge, Libellen und einzelne Käfer, gelten als besonders schön und interessant.
A big variety of insect species live in different biospheres in the `land between the seas`. Some of them like mosquitos, wasps, ants or flies are often considered as rather annoying, whereas others like butterflies, dragon flies or some beetles are more popular and most people find them beautiful or interesting.
Lebensräume für die Insekten verschwinden aber immer mehr. Ohne Insekten kann unsere Natur allerdings nicht leben. Bei uns sind zunehmend die Wildbienen gefährdet. Sie sind Einzelgänger, im Gegensatz zu ihren Verwandten den Honigbienen. Des weiteren sind sie meist alleinerziehend oder bevorzugen eine Wohngemeinschaft, indem sie einen Nestzugang teilen. Hierzu bieten neben Sand- und Heidelandschaften auch abgestorbene Pflanzenmaterialien eine wichtige Unterkunft.
Unfortunately, the number of biospheres for insects is decreasing more and more which puts them at risk – and nature cannot survive without insects. Wild bees for example are increasingly endangered. In contrast to honey bees they are solitary. Furthermore most of them are either single parental or nest-sharing with a single entrance to the nest.
Dies stellte bereits im letzten Jahrhundert der berühmte französische Naturforscher Jean-Henri Fabre fest. Er liebte Insekten und beobachtet die Lebensweise zahlreicher Wildbienen und beschrieb diese in seinem umfangreichen Werk „Souvenirs Entomologiques“ auf 4000 Seiten in 219 Kapiteln.
This has been discovered more than a hundred years ago by the famous french scientist Jean-Henri Fabre and documented in his book „Souvenirs Entomologiques“ (1879-1909). He loved insects and observed the lives of several wild bees. Hence he described his findings in 219 chapters on 4000 pages.
Jean-Henri Fabre war es, der bereits durch das Anbieten von hohlen Pflanzenstengel die Lebensweise von Bienen studiert hat und somit damals schon die heute weitverbreitete Methode, Nisthilfen und Unterkünfte aus Naturmaterialien anzubieten, erfolgreich angewendet hat.
It was Jean-Henri Fabre who studied the environment of bees by using hollow stems, a method that is widely spread nowadays to build nest sites for solitary bees.
