Hoamsa Temple Cave(호암사 백인굴) EarthCache

경기도 의정부시 호원동 산 27번지(의정부시 범골로 35-283), 호암사 경내에 있다.

동굴 이름은 '백명이 들어갈 정도로 큰 동굴'이라는 뜻이다.

백인굴은 범굴이라고도 한다. 이름 그대로 범이 살던 굴이라는 뜻이고, 범굴이 있는 호암사 뒷쪽 바위가 바로 범바위(호암)다. 즉 호암사는 '범바위' 아래 있는 절이라는 뜻이다. 호암사가 있는 골짜기에는 옛부터 호랑이가 많이 살아 범골이라 불렀다.

자연동굴은 크게 석회동굴, 용암동굴, 해식동굴, 하식동굴, 풍화동굴 등으로 구분된다.  호암사 백인굴은 이 중 풍화동굴에 해당된다.

풍화동굴은 이름 그대로 풍화작용에 의해 발달한 동굴로서 주로 화강암에서 잘 발달한다.

화강암은 원래 땅속 깊은 곳에서 만들어진 암석인데, 여러가지 원인들에 의해 화강암에 균열이 가면 이 균열 틈으로 지하수가 스며들면서 풍화작용을 일으키게 된다. 이때 균열이 있던 부분은 점점 확장되어 결국 동굴형태가 되기도 하는데 이것이 풍화동굴이다. 호암사 백인굴은 화강암 풍화동굴의 대표적인 사례지역이다.

백인굴은 상부동굴과 하부동굴로 구성되어 있어 동굴 입구가 두 군데인 것이 특징이다.  재미있는 것은 하부동굴 아래, 호암사경내의 용수를 공급해주는 샘물인 '용수방'도 결국 나중에는 또 다른 동굴 입구가 될 것으로 보인다.

백인굴의 생성 메커니즘        

거대한 화강암반 내부에 산 사면 방향을 따라 절리(joint)가 발달했고 그 절리를 따라 지하수가 아래쪽으로 흐르면서 자연스럽게 암반을 풍화시켜 그 지하수가 흐르던 통로는 동굴이 되었다. 지하수는 처음에는 상부동굴쪽으로 흘러나왔고 나중에는 하부동굴로 흘러나오면서 백인굴을 만든 것이다. 그 지하수는 지금은 더 아래쪽으로 흘러 '용수방'에서 다시 흘러나오는 것이다. 용수방은 지금 작은 샘물에 지나지 않지만 오랜 세월이 지나면 상부, 하부 동굴에 이어 또 다른 커다란 세번째 동굴 입구가 될 것이다.

백인굴의 형성원인은 차별적인 풍화작용 때문이다. 즉 화강암 내부에 절리와 같은 균열이 가게 되면 그 부분은 더 쉽게 풍화가 진행되고 풍화된 물질이 제거되면서 결국 동굴이 만들어진다.

The name of the Cave, Baegingul, means ‘a cave that is big enough to accommodate a hundred people.’

Natural caves are categorized into limestone caves, lava caves, sea caves, fluvial caves and weathered caves. Baegingul Cave is a kind of the weathered caves.

Weathered cave is developed primarily by weathering, which is mainly developed in granite. Granite is originally a rock formed in deep underground. Cracks are made by various reason - heat, pressure and so on - in granite and water gets into the crack. The cracks in the rock are gradually expanding and eventually become a cave shape, which is a weathered cave. Baegingul Cave is a typical example of a granite weathering cave.

The reason for the formation of the cave is the discriminatory weathering process. In other words, when cracks are made in granite,  the area around the cracks become more prone to weathering. Afterwards weathered soil will be removed by water flow and the passages will be the caves.

Baegin is characterized by the upper cave and the lower cave, which features two passages of the cave entrance.The interesting thing is that a spring in the water supply room for the temple below the lower cave will eventually become another cave entrance sometime in the future.

The development mechanism of Baegingul Cave

Joints were developed along with the slope of the mountain. Underground water flowed through the cracks in joints down the mountainside and that water passage had been widened to become a cave.

The underground water was initially ejected from the upper cave. Afterwards the water flows through the cracks inside the rock and made the lower cave. The underground water now flows more downward and made a spring in water supply room for the temple. The water supply room is now little more than a small spring, but after a long period of time, it will be another entrance of the cave.
