Installés à Montréal afin d'exercer leur charge d'aumôniers auprès de l'armée française, les Récollets regroupent en 1692 des parcelles de terre dans lequel ils construiront un couvent. Après la conquête par les Britanniques, le gouvernement échange l'ancien domaine des Récollets pour obtenir l'île Sainte-Hélène, possédée par la baronne de Longueuil, épouse de Charles William Grant. Celui-ci procède immédiatement au lotissement du terrain et à l'ouver-
ture de trois nouvelles rues en 1818: la rue Le Moyne, la rue des Récollets et la rue Sainte-Hélène. Entre 1858 et 1871, la rue Sainte-Hélène connaît un essor considérable et une dizai-
ne de magasins-entrepôts y sont construits.

Established in Montreal to exercise their duties as chaplains to the French army, the Recollets gathered in 1692 parcels of land in which they will build a convent. After the conquest by the British, the government exchanged the former domain of the Récollets to obtain the Sainte-Hélène Island, owned by the Baronne de Longueuil, wife of Charles William Grant. The latter immediately proceeded to the subdivision of the land and the opening of three new streets in 1818: Le Moyne, des Récollets and Sainte-Hélène streets. Between 1858 and 1871, the Sainte-Hélène street grew considerably and a dozen warehouse-shops were built there.

En 1870, Andrew Frederick Gault achète un terrain afin d'ériger un nouveau magasin-entrepôt pour la Gault Brothers & Co., un commerce de gros de dry goods (tissus, articles de mercerie, etc.). Le propriétaire retient les services de l’architecte John James Browne pour le projet de-
vant abriter les bureaux et les salles de montre de la firme. Le nouveau magasin-entrepôt de cinq étages avec toit mansardé est construit en 1871 et occupé entièrement par le propriétaire à partir de 1872. L’entrée principale au coin de la rue est particulièrement remarquable et re-
flète bien l’image de marque que veut se donner l’entreprise.

In 1870, Andrew Frederick Gault bought a piece of land in order to erect a new warehouse for the Gault Brothers & Co., a wholesale of dry goods (fabrics, haberdashery, etc.). The owner retains the services of architect John James Browne for the project to house the offices and showrooms of the firm. The new five-storey warehouse with an attic roof is built in 1871 and occupied entirely by the owner from 1872. The main entrance at the corner is particularly remarkable and reflects well the image that wants to be given the company.

Seule rue de Montréal ainsi éclairée, elle est devenue un emplacement de choix pour le tournage de films et demeure à ce jour un exemple remarquable d'homogénéité architecturale dans le Vieux-Montréal.

In the evening, be sure to come and admire the 22 gas lanterns on Saint-Hélène street, a discreet tribute to a past lighting style. The only street in Montréal that has been illuminated that way, it has become a prime location for film shooting and remains a remarkable example of architectural homogeneity in Old Montréal.
