Geocache Description:

This brings your to another cemetery in the area that may go unnoticed by many people.

During our early history in Cambria County, many Carpatho-Rusyn immigrants came to work the coal fields and steel mills. The towns of South Fork, Ehrenfeld, and St. Michael attracted many of these people in the 1890's.The Fifik (Fiffick) family from Porac, Spis County that included Jan FIfik, his wife Marija Dolobac, Matez Fifik and his wife Marija Hanuscak settled in an area between South Fork and Ehrenfeld in the early 1900's. This area became known as Fifficktown They founded the St. Michael Greek Catholic Church in 1905. The building was finished in 1907 at which time the first Greek Catholic Bishop in the US - Soter Ortgnsky - lived for a short while. As was the custom, a cemetery was established behind the church, which is on a steep hillside. Some parishoners came from as far away as Altoona. The church was closed in 2011 due to declining membership and was combined with 2 other churches to form the Most Holy Trinity Church in South Fork. The building was torn down several years later. There are many interesting older gravestones as well as newer ones. Many are written in the language of the immigrants. You are looking for a hanging bision. The parking area is where the church once stood. As always, please be respectful of the area and no night caching. BYOP.

CONGRATULATIONS Fusiondriver and Snew15956 FTF's!
