Geocache Description:

Cryne Corse Road

This suite of caches follows the historic drover’s trail as waymarked by the Scottish Rights of Way Society between Spyhill on the Slug Road over Fetteresso Forest past the Durris TV transmitter to the Forestry Commission Car parking area at Upper Quithel on the South side of the Mounth. The route can also be walked from South to North.

The route by its very nature means that in order to complete it in one go requires transport at both ends. Alternatively it can be completed in two parts one visit from the North and one from the South.

The Southern half is entirely on well surfaced logging tracks.

The Northern part is a mixture of a drivable tarmac road servicing the TV mast and very boggy peat tracks demanding good waterproof boots and a sense of adventure.

The entire route is waymarked by green arrows on white disks and information signs at each terminus. Take note of this fact it may be useful.

Here the route passes Red Beard's Well, which is located at the source of the Adequoich Burn.  The well is named after the head of a group of highwaymen who would wait in a cave on Craigbeg for passing victims.  The site highlights the danger to travellers on lesser known routes and also the importance of wells, springs and fresh water to the course taken by old roads.  As people took so long to travel from place to place and would exert a great deal of effort in doing so, there was a great need for roads to pass many sources of fresh water; often old wells would be ornately decorated.

Note this cache is located close to an environmental monitoring station operated by SEPA. To find the cache there is no need to enter the fenced off compound or interfere with any monitoring equipment.

Terrain rating represents the whole trail. Using the upper parking area this is a T1.5.

Before a forest visit, remember to clean your shoes, bike, any toys or equipment and your dog too. Just take a moment to brush off any visible dirt, and give everything a good wash. This helps slow disease spread, preserving our woodlands now and for future generations.  http://scotland.forestry.gov.uk/keep-it-clean
