Geocache Description:

About 3 miles south of Shaftesbury, Melbury Hill rises to 263 metres above sea level at Melbury Beacon giving commanding views westward across North Dorset. In conjunction with Fontmell Down, Compton Down and Melbury Down it forms that largest contiguous area (293ha) of chalk grassland owned by the National Trust.

This Cache is the first of 6 and combines with the caches below to make a circular route around Compton Down and Melbury Hill. The complete route is a about 3 miles (5km) involving a total of about 500 ft (150m) of ascent and descent. Geodogs are welcome but please keep them under close control as the Down & Hill are grazed by animals.

The suggested starting point is the National Trust Car Park at the top of Spread Eagle Hill (N 50’ 58.061 W002’ 9.817). This is a popular location, particularly in good weather. If the car park is full then additional parking can be found at Gore Clump, the road to Compton Abbas Airfield. Traffic on this narrow road is fast moving so please take care turning into or exiting the car park or if you have to cross the road.

Note: The difficulty for each of the caches is on an individual basis. The Terrain takes into account the whole route and all caches involved. You will need a pen for the micro-caches and unless you have a photographic memory a method of recording the clues which are pictographic.

To find this cache leave the car park northwards along the roadside path until you reach the gateway onto Compton Down. You are looking for a Bison style micro cache which contains only the log book, please bring a pen. The logs in this series use waterproof paper, please use an indelible marker, biro or pencil.
