After the dissolution of the monasteries Fontmell Down and adjoining lands passed in to the hands of the Sir Thomas Arundel of Wardour. The remains of Old Wardour Castle, built in the 14th Century and now owned by English Heritage, stands a few miles away, near Tisbury. The castle was badly damaged in the Civil War. The Royalist owner, Henry Arundel, was attempting to recapture it from the occupying Parliamentarian forces when to the considerable surprise of both sides an explosive charge set under the castle walls was triggered prematurely by a stray spark!
Note: The difficulty for each of the caches is on an individual basis. The Terrain takes into account the whole route and all caches involved. You will need a pen for the micro-caches.
This cache combines with the caches below to make a circular route around Compton Down and Melbury Hill. The complete route is a about 3 miles (5km) involving a total of about 500 ft (150m) of ascent and descent. Geodogs are welcome but please keep them under close control as the Down & Hill are grazed by animals.
