The Passaic River at West Essex cache is located at the The Essex County Environmental Center is located in the western section of Essex County at West Essex Park. West Essex Park is 1,360 acres of wetlands preserve which remains almost entirely undeveloped. It stretches along six miles of the Passaic River, starting at Bloomfield Avenue in Fairfield, and ending just beyond South Orange Avenue in Livingston.
The Passaic River is a river that provides a lesson in extremes. The river rises from a trickle in the Great Swamp Watershed area of Mendham, traverses and meanders for 90 miles before emptying into Newark Bay. Along the way, a radical transformation occurs. The same river that breathes life into the near-pristine wetlands of the Great Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, rushed through the Great Falls of Paterson then becomes so polluted that its last 17 miles have been declared a Superfund Site.
This trail can be muddy at times, please plan on proper foot wear.
