Geocache Description:

This geocache has been set by members of the 6th Whitstable Scouts troop as one of the activities needed to gain the Geocaching Activity badge.

This geocache has been set by members of the 6th Whitstable Scouts troop as one of the activities needed to gain the Geocaching Activity badge.

The town of Whitstable currently has 4 active scout troops - the 1st, 2nd (Sea Scouts), 3rd,and 6th.

In order to gain the Geocaching Activity badge scouts need to learn about GPS and how to programme a GPS receiver, know the difference between OS and GPS coordinates, and plan a route on an OS map then programme it into a GPS receiver and walk the route. They have to understand the safety and environmental aspects of geocaching, such as the Highway Code, Countryside Code and the Geocaching Association of Great Britain (GAGB) guidelines. They then have to sign up to a geocaching website such as Geocaching.com, find 5 geocaches (3 of which should be multi-caches), and finally plan, assemble and hide two caches, one of which should be a multi-cache. This cache is that multi-cache!

As this is a part of the scouts Geocaching Activity badge and Whitstable has 4 active troops we thought it would be good to make this geocache ‘Scouts themed’. Thus each stage of this multi-cache takes you to the site of each of the scout troop’s HQs where you will need to find the clues needed to locate the main cache. The route is approximately 3 miles long. There should be parking available near to all of the stages. It is ‘Pay and Display’ parking next to the 2nd Whitstable scout hall (Stage 2).

The coordinates for the main cache are N 51o AB.CD3, E 001o 0E.F0G. To find out what number each letter represents you must visit each stage and work out the clues.

Stage 1

Coordinates - N 51o 21.508, E 001o 01.680

This is the HQ of the 1st Whitstable Scout Group. On the burglar alarm above the entrance is a telephone number.

The 3rd number of that telephone number =A,

and the 4th number = B.

Stage 2

Coordinates - N 51o 21.838, E 001o 01.721

This is the HQ of the 2nd Whitstable Sea Scouts Group. Parking here is Pay and Display run by a private firm who will fine you if they catch you parking without a ticket!

On the hall is a plaque commemorating the 2nd Whitstable Sea Scouts 80th anniversary.

In what year were they formed? (wxyz).

x-w = C,

w+y+z = D

Stage 3

Coordinates - N 51o 21.326, E 001o 02.406

This is the HQ of the 3rd Whitstable Scout Group next to the church yard of All Saints Church. Nearby is the headstone of Laura Goodsall. When was she born?

The month of her birth = E,

The first 2 numbers of the year she was born when added together = F

Stage 4

Coordinates - N 51o 21.850, E 001o 03.955

This is the HQ of the 6th Whitstable Scout Group. On the wall is a stone laid by Councillor M. J. O'Callaghan.

The last number of the year the stone was laid =G

.

Put the numbers into the clue to find the coordinates of the main cache:

N 51o AB.CD3, E 001o 0E.F0G
