There is note attached to the wall a sign that the Paeroa Scouts are trying to restore the hut.
September 2018.
I know nothing about its history other than this was once a route between Paeroa and Waitekauri.
Park at the end of Reservoir Road and follow the track past the dam. After 10 minutes there is a crossing of the Tarariki Stream and the track starts to climb. There are a few good viewing points on the way up and after passing through some pine trees there is an old garden hedge, a reminder of the home which once stood near by when a forty eight acre block was farmed here. Some of the post and rail fencing is still standing in the secondary growth. Once through the hedge stay on the track which circles the lake. There is no need go off track at any stage.
Please take the usually precautions when entering the bush. Ensure you tell someone where you are going. While the track is easy to follow there are very few markers on the track. Some good bush sense is required on this track.
Time from car to cache is approx 1 hour.
Please take your own pen.
Please note that the track after the "Old Homestead" cache passes near a hidden lake and an old mai mai that may be active during the duck shooting season (May-June). Take care during this time of the year
