Mount Vinson is the highest peak in Antarctica, lying in the north of Vinson Massif’s summit plateau, about 2 km north of Hollister Peak; and 1,200 km from the South Pole. Vinson Massif was discovered in January 1958 by US Navy aircraft; and in 1961 named after Carl G Vinson, United States congressman (Georgia), for his support for Antarctic exploration. [Wikipedia]
Located in the northern section of Avon Valley National Park. Access is via unsealed roads, mostly by 4WD, though regular 2WD cars could make it (as did I) with careful driving; but best avoided after heavy rainfall. Do keep alert during periods of extreme fire danger risk. Stay hydrated.
