Updated Description from July 2009
After 7 years I returned to this area. I understand why vacation
caches are no longer approved, but this was before than.
Fortunately it is far enough out that it doesn't get a lot of
visitors. I ran out along the beach to the Jetty early this
morning, it was about 2.5 miles from where I parked the van in teh
day use lot...then I used the trail across the area to the west
side. I almost came up the trail that is in the middle of the isle,
but realized as had others had that I'd have to bushwack 500 feet
or more to get to the cache. So I turned around and went back
toward the jetty and then all the way to the east side and came up
the beach on the bay side until I was directly east of the cache,
then found the trail from the beach past the bathrooms and toward
the cache. I came off the main trail and on to a little geocaching
trail around the east side of the knoll and to the cache. I had to
find my own cache after seven years.
The container itself was still in good shape, in Utah the cold
of the winters makes tupperware get brittle, cracked and broken.
However everything inside was moist, damp, and disgusting.
Fortunately I brought a brand-new watertight geocaching container
to replace the old one. New log, and some small new swag inside.
I'll update the descriptions in the next few days, but for now I
just want to log a note about my trip out and back.
Coming back from the cache I followed the sand trail/road to the
day use parking lot. That way it was only 1.85 miles.
So now I've done my own cache, by boat, by the ocean beach and
by the trail in the State park.
Original Description from 2002
For several years this has been one of our favorite spots to stop
while on vacation. Being from Utah we love the opportunity to go
crabbing while here in Oregon. Nehalem bay is the best place for us
"land-lovers" to try crabbing. We couldn't believe that no one had
placed a cache here yet. Not only is the crabbing fun, but there
are also seals on the Nehalem peninsula and in the last couple of
years, whales have come in the bay to check things out.
Even our little kids enjoy crabbing, although there is a lot of
screaming when the pots come into the boat.
. Because we liked this area so much we
decided to leave this cache.
Terrain rating is a 3 because you either need to hike in, or use
a boat to get to the cache. (We used the boat)! If you use a boat,
the hike to the cache is very close.
The orginal contents of the cache include things to make you
happy.... or in other words "Not Crabby".
