At the Canadian Memorial on Worthing Seafront
Feel free to bring along something that says Canada to you, as well as any trackables and tall tales
The memorial here at the end of Grand Avenue is in honour of all the Canadian armed forces who were stationed in and around Worthing. It is sited at one of the positions that Canadian servicemen manned the large guns defending the South Coast from possible invasion. Many of these Canadians left for Dieppe in August 1942 and never returned. Although it is still argued that extremely valuable lessons were learned in the Raid on Dieppe, a steep price was paid. More than three quarters of the 6100 troops involved in the assault were Canadian. Of the 4693 Canadians who embarked on the operation, only 2,210 of them returned to England, and many of these were wounded. There were 3,367 casualties, including 1,946 prisoners of war; 916 Canadians lost their lives.
