The fourth in a series of Flash Mobs to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Star Trek's first broadcast.
I'm a big Trekkie, and a fan of 50s and 60s sci-fi films in general, so this is my little tribute to all things Trek and beyond.
Here's the plan:
2:00pm – We'll all meet at the co-ords
2:05pm – Competition to see who's alien can travel farthest (see below)
2:20pm – All gather together for a group photo
2:30pm – Everyone beam up to their respective craft as if we were never there!
The Competition
There are instructions on how to build your own alien launcher below. Bring your launcher along to the Flash Mob and the one which projects their alien the furthest will win a small prize. I will supply the aliens for you to launch, so all you need to do is build your launcher! I'll bring my tricorder (tape measure), just in case it's close!
That's about it. Enjoy making your launcher and I'll see you there!
In the event of a cosmic ray outburst (ie, if it rains…), the winner will be the best decorated launcher in Astrotrowel's opinion.
And don't forget (you never know, you might)…
DON'T WEAR A RED SHIRT!
Alien Launcher
Materials
• 9 craft sticks (available from your friendly river-based online retailer)
• 6 rubber bands
• 1 plastic spoon
• Paint/colouring materials (you can get coloured craft sticks, though)
Directions
• Tie a rubber band tightly around one end of 7 of the craft sticks.
• Do the same to the other end of the stack, so that the 7 sticks are bound together.
• Tie a rubber band around one end of the remaining two sticks.
• Insert the stack of 7 sticks between the two stick bundle.
• Tie a rubber band in a cross to join the two parts. If you get 7 stick stack as close to the edge as you possibly can, the launcher will have more leverage.
• You should end up with something that looks a little like the picture below!
Launch
• Place the supplied alien in the spoon, pull and let go!
