We Love Highway 14: Fallbridge Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Dan & Janet: It was a good 10 years for this one, but changing vegetation is making it harder to get to and it appears it is hidden in a what has become a wildlife habitat. We pulled the box and are archiving it regretfully.

Geocache Description:

Child Suitability: « 2 » (Children may require help on the last leg of this hunt.) See our [profile] for details. This is the tenth in our series of caches designed to share the awe-inspiring scenery and rich history of Highway 14 along the Columbia River. We hope you find the history of this area as interesting as we do.

Celilo Falls and the steel truss railroad bridge located here inspired the town's original name of Fallbridge in 1911. But, with plans for a basalt monument commemorating early pioneers, in 1926 the Spokane Portland & Seattle Railway suggested the townspeople petition for a name change to Wishram, honoring the area's indian inhabitants. Wishram was the name applied to the local Native Americans who had been residents here for centuries. The word "Wishram" is Chinookan dialect meaning "louse or flea". (Draw your own conclusions from this!) Fallbridge was originally the perfect example of a "railroad town". Built in an isolated and bleak location, accessible only by rail or boat, conceived solely for the railroad and providing everything needed by the railroad. Hot, dusty and windy in summer; cold, wet and windy in winter. Yet, in fact, through the years, Wishram grew into a comfortable layover point for train crews and even a satisfying home for many families. In the early years trees were planted to help break the wind and offer shade from the summer sun. As the town grew, so did a sense of pride and belonging on the part of many residents. The cache is a small ammo box. Finding it requires travel on an unimproved gravel road. Four-wheel drive is NOT necessary. At no point do you need to cross the railroad tracks. You will, however, drive near the tracks for a short distance. Please use caution and watch for trains. This road is regularly used by fisherman and locals. At the above coordinates you will need to find the following information: The Dalles Dam silenced Celilo Falls in what year? (a)_____] How many million dollars was paid for the loss of the fishery at Celilo Falls? (b)_____] In what year was Public Law 100-581 passed providing indians with fishing access sites? (c)_____] How many such fishing sites were provided for? (d)_____] WW = b + 13 XXX = c - 1655 YY = d + 32 ZZZ = a - 1515 Cache coordinates are: N45° WW.XXX / W120° YY.ZZZ
