The four caches I placed in this area are fairly straightforward and findable. Here is another bench and Little Library to relax and read.... or take a hike through the Nature Walk as it circles around back to cache "Walk Along the 'Flats". Parking is best near Flat at the Flats. BYOP. Please replace carefully. The "flat" container was replaced with a different one and moved a bit.
The "Flats" is a shallow water area in Green Bay off the shores of Menekaunee (Marinette, WI). Historically, the 'flats' were muddy and swampy. During the year of the Great Fire of 1871, the 'flats' were totally dry and the entire town of Menekaunee was burned to the ground. Presently, the water ranges from 1-6 feet deep for nearly a mile from the shore. When I moved to Marinette in 1980, the 'flats' was where my new husband taught me to windsurf. It was a perfect place for this newbie, who spent days falling off and climbing back on the board, to finally catch the wind in the sails and catch the windsurfing fever for many years. Now, much older, I walk my dog KC along W. Bay Shore and enjoy the beauty of the "Flats".
