Geocache Description:

A cache located on a short detour off of 219 if you can find the exit on Lorne Ave before the curve to the west . It is a stop and grab magnetic bison tube a little SW of " For The Birds " . In the winter of 55-56 this was the end of the road .

In December 1955 a great blizzard struck this area , roads were blocked solid but the state of roads at the time was largely to blame. Many like this one had eroded to a sunken track  2 or 3 feet below the berms of dirt on either side . Snow and wind filled them in and snow plough's had no where to push the snow . By new year's we got word that no further effort was going to be made to open this road until spring . People traveled on horseback with difficulty ,  or on ski's . To get supplys we needed , the 8 mile round trip took a day and a half with a team and sleigh . We made only one such trip so by spring the pantry was very bare . The lessons learned brought graded roads with wider ditches with gentle slopes to allow snow to keep moving . Trees and brush were mowed down and snow ploughs got wing blades to smooth  the ridges created. PATH TO THE CACHE INVOLVES A SHORT BUT STEEP CLIMB . KNOBBY SHOES WILL HELP BUT IN WINTER SNOW COULD BE QUITE DEEP . CHECKED FOR A BETTER SITE BUT THIS ONE WAS CHOSEN AS A SAFER PLACE TO PARK .
