Across Starkweather Creek, and through the trees, from the cache is the former Garver Feed Mill.
The building was built in the early 1900's and operated by the United States Sugar Company from 1906 to 1924. It processed sugar beets into sugar and was known locally as the “Sugar Castle.” At the time it was the largest factory in Wisconsin. The effluent from the factory was dumped into the creek, which turned the creek and the east end of Lake Monona red.
The building was purchased in 1929 and operated as Garver Feed and Supply until it closed in 1997.
Currently, there are plans to use the building as an artisan food production facility.
I live within view of the cache site and will try to come out and greet you if I have a chance.
