Dixon Hill Lighthouse - Built in 1862 on a former plantation owned by John Dixon, the Dixon Hill Lighthouse is the last of 2 hand operated lighthouse left in The Bahamas and the world. The lighthouse stands 163 feet above sea level, its light has a visibility of 19 miles and is operated by 400,000 candle strength kerosene oil light. There are two sets of buildings located on the property, the first set dating back to the 1700’s and the time of the loyalists and the planation era. These would include the wall and the smaller buildings furthest away from Light House. The second set of buildings are approximately 100 years younger which would consist of the light house, the bathroom building, and the two light house keepers residence. From the top of the light house one can see the great lakes that make up the islands interior, the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the settlement of United Estates, the largest settlement on the island.
