Geocache Description:

Visit the site of 19th century Columbus Historian Fr. Scheriner. his grave is located right next to a whipping post that was used to discipline slaves back in the 1700's during the time of the loyalists.

Fr. Chrysostomus Scheriner Grave – Fr. Scheriner was the first Catholic Priest permanently assigned to the Bahamas. He was a history enthusiast specializing in the study of Christopher Columbus. It was his extensive research of Columbus’s landing that helped to further promote San Salvador as the correct landing site of Columbus in 1492. It was also his research that brought about the placement of the Second Columbus monument on the island the Columbus Cross located on Landfall Park on Long Bay Beach. The double grave located at Harbor Yard holds remains of the last Loyalist left on the Island Mr. Burton Williams as well as Fr. Scheriner. The smaller grave to the right is thought to be the grave of Mr. William’s wife Jane Hartley. To the left of the graves sits the slab upon which the planation slaves where whipped if the need arose, according to the plantation master. There are still a number of “whipping posts” that still remain on San Salvador from the time of the slaves.
