***Please note that if it has been raining recently it is advisable to wear waterproof leggings and boots as the grass can be waist high in parts of the footpath during spring and summer***

The Gladiator Click here to listen to the song
Again, whilst we were setting these new caches, we were walking alongside a healthy field of wheat, Russell Crowe sprang to mind in the opening sequences to Gladiator trailing his hand through the ripened heads of wheat as he meandered casually through the field, clearly not abiding to the Country Code and keeping to the footpath!

Here is a simple delicious recipe using wheat.
Aunt Vi's Wheaten bread
My Aunt Vi made the best wheaten soda bread. Her daughters and her nieces(me) often asked for the recipe but she would just say, "och, I just throw the ingredients in a bowl, stir it round a bit and bake it!" We have been trying to work it out ever since. This is the nearest I've got to it.
50 g butter, 50g treacle, 250g wholemeal, or whole grain or seeded flour, 225 self raising flour, hefty pinch of salt, 4 tsp demerara sugar, handful of whole oat flakes, 1 and a half teaspoons of baking soda, 275 ml of buttermilk ( Irish buttermilk is much thinner - more like whey- so if you have bought thicker yoghurt type - thin down with ordinary milk. If you cant get hold of it just use milk with a tbsp. of lemon juice.)
Heat oven to 210 C
Mix all dry ingredients in a bowl except for the oats. Make a well in the centre.
Melt butter and treacle together gently in a pan. Add buttermilk to the pan - no need to heat again.
Then stir the wet into the dry and mix to a soft dough. If the dough is hard and dry add a little more milk until soft.
Form into a ball. Place on a floured baking sheet and flatten slightly. Slash a cross on the top. Sprinkle oats ( or seeds) on top.
Bake in an oven 210 C for 15 mins, then reduce heat to 160 C until it sounds hollow when you rap the bottom. Maybe another 25 mins but keep an eye on it!
Its lovely with butter! Best eaten same day or makes good toast the next day. Aunt Vi used to bake every other day.
