The mill pond trail is part of the Kuncanowet (pronounced KunCAnowET) Town Forest and Conservation Area (KTFCA) (which means mountain place of the bear). It's comprised of an area almost 1000 acres. It was put together in 1989 by generous landowners, Dunbarton Town Forest and a grant from the Trust For New Hampshire Lands and the Land Conservation Investment Program. It is managed by 9 people (3 members of the Town Forest Committee, 3 members of the Conservation Commission, and 3 members at large from Dunbarton citizens). It is a carry in, carry out area. There are moose, bear, deer, bobcat, turkey and other wildlife in the area.
When this area was used as a logging operation many years ago, there was a railroad that use to haul the logs out until one time sparks from the locomotive set the woods on fire and burnt the entire area.
Another incident occured when a logger was hired to harvest an owner's land but he logged the wrong property. Consequently the logger had to replant the trees on the other owner's land with red pine trees. That is why you can see what looks like a plantation of red pines near the Stinson mill site.
For a map, list of the trails, time and distance (one way) and trail junctions coordinates, check the gallery of pictures, Dunbarton town office or a committee member.
